Restaurant Review: Sakaye

By Kaki Narh

The general consensus was if you ignored the 50’s diner infrastructure and faced away from the flat screen tv broadcasting a hockey game, you would be forgiven for mistaking that you were in Japan eating in a typical Japanese restaurant. Sakaye, in the city of Cambridge in the Waterloo region, might be thousands of kilometres away from that favourite eating establishment in Japan, but the food, décor and friendliness of the staff will most likely leave you feeling natsukashii.

Sakaye bills itself as a Japanese and Korean restaurant with an extensive and fairly authentic à la carte menu, but where it shines is in its all-you-can-eat option. For $24.99, you can eat sushi, maki rolls, sashimi, croquettes, gyoza, salads, and all manner of flesh for the Korean bbq.  You will, however, have to eat EVERYTHING you order as there is a $3.00 per piece penalty for anything you leave behind. Not that this was a problem. The sashimi was delectable, particularly the salmon, though the crab sticks should probably be avoided, and the “Rock and Roll” maki was a big hit. However, the biggest squeals of happiness can be owed to the pièce de résistance, the dessert. Sakaye boasts  5 far-east inspired ice cream flavours: mango, ginger, vanilla, red bean and green tea. In fact, the ice cream was so good, several diners ordered double helpings with one ordering all 5 flavours!

So should you make a special trip out to Cambridge for some good Japanese/Korean grub? Well, let’s put it this way: if you’re out that way, definitely swing by to feel nostalgic and fill your belly at the same time.
