Sayonara Sugimoto-Sensei

As you may already know, our beloved JETAA Japanese Language teacher Yoko Sugimoto is leaving us after 13 years of teaching JET Alumni. As she will be greatly missed, it was only fitting that we said our goodbye and gratitude with a warm-hearted Soubetsukai Party.

This was held Monday, June 17th on a gorgeous summer evening with a spectacular view of the CN tower in the West End. Much thanks are in order for Carey Heeney, who so graciously housed the party at her place and for also having an amazing track record when it comes to Japanese class, as she is Sugimoto-sensei’s oldest pupil having started the class in it’s 2nd year of running.

JETAA Tea Ceremony Event Report

Learning the Ways of Japanese Tea

Sick of your everyday run of the mill Tim Horton’s Orange Pekoe? How about try something a little more rich and steeped with over 900 years of tradition?

On March 21st, friends and members of JETAA had the chance to do just that, by attending a Japanese Tea Ceremony here in Toronto. The ceremony was presented by the Discover Japan Program of the JCCC with the help of four knowledgeable teachers trained in the art and traditions of Sadou: Yamamoto-Sensei, Suzuki-Sensei, Tsugita-Sensei, and Ota-Sensei. Together they were able to help educate us in the proper techniques associated with drinking tea à la Japonais.

New JETs Take Off For Japan!

The annual Pre-Departure Orientation (held June 24-26) was a huge success. New JETs learned more about their soon-to-be new lives in Japan by attending various workshops covering areas such as rural living, office relationships, traveling in Japan, and being a first time teacher and many more. JAVA once again put together a humourous skit about Japanese social etiquette, which has always been a welcome addition to orientation. Now with the new JETs arriving in Japan, we at JETAA wish them all the best and hope they will adjust well to their new lives.

After a full day of preparation for their upcoming adventure in Japan, our enthusiastic group of newly appointed Toronto JETs headed to the Bedford Academy pub to relax and unwind over a few drinks and light appetizers.

A Boat Cruise To Remember

IMG_0643

July 10th was a perfect summer evening to sail by the Toronto skyline. That’s exactly what dozens of JETAA members did along with members of JAVA and CJS, coming together for an awesome summer boat cruise. The sold out evening with over 250 Canadian and Japanese participants included two floors of talented DJs and well stocked bars.

The photo-worthy sunset over the lake perfectly complimented the bright yukatas that dotted the boat.
